Gains in efficiency, according to officials, over traditional inboards are due to a decrease in overall drag, the creation of horizontal thrust, and the use of counter-rotating propellers. The company said that the system delivers a faster top speed, faster cruise speed and better fuel economy.
The pod drive, which will be launched on production 2007 models, can be mated with a 500hp Quantum series engine.
The system also uses a proprietary joystick control, SmartCraft electronics integration and has an interesting "station-keeping" feature that uses GPS technology to keep a boat firmly in place. It also keeps the boat on a fixed heading within a tight area, even in strong currents.
