2006 European Yacht of the Year winners revealed

The winners of the 2006 European Yacht of the Year have been announced on the opening day of the Düsseldorf Boat Show.

The awards are judged by a panel of senior journalists drawn from top yachting magazines in 10 European countries, including Boot in Germany, Motor Boat and Yachting in the UK and Barche a Motore in Italy, Waterkampioen in Holland and Yate in Spain.

The magazines nominate possible candidates over the course of the year before the panel produce a shortlist of around 25 yachts. These are judged in the final round in November.

Winner of the European Powerboat of the Year under 30 ft (9 m) was the Sealine S29. Jason Hudson, sales director for Sealine International, commented: "We are delighted to have won this prestigious award as it is a great endorsement for our innovative S29 sports cruiser which has been well received throughout Europe since its launch last January."

Also shortlisted were the Four Winns Vista 258, Jeanneau Cap Camarat 925, Linssen Grand Sturdy 299 and the Searay Sundancer 245.

In the under 40 ft (12 m) category, the Windy Grand Tornado 32 beat off competition from the Bénéteau Flyer 12, Chris Craft Corsair 36, Fiart Genius 38 and the Gobbi Atlantis 39.

The Fairline Targa 47 Gran Turismo won the under 50 ft (15 m) category from the Azimut 45S, Elan Power 42, Mochi Dolphin 44 and the Oyster LD 43 Power.

Among the largest yachts in the competition, in the over 50 ft (15 m) Powerboat category, the Riva Ego 68 scored the top award. Also shortlisted were the Ferretti Altura 690 and Ferretti 731, Princess P 67, and the Sessa C 52.

On the sailing front, shortlisted yachts were divided into five categories to compete for European Yacht of the Year.

Winner of the under 10 m (33 ft) category was the Elan Impression 344, which beat the Bavaria 30, Café 27, Fast Zero and the J-100.

The Hanse 400e came first in its under 12 m (39 ft) category, ahead of the Dufour 365, Grand Soleil 37, Hallberg-Rassy 342 and the X-35.

Missing out on the top spot in its powerboat category, Jeanneau did win the under 14 m (46 ft) European Yacht of the Year with its Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45. The other candidates were the C-Yacht 1250, Comet 41s, Najad 440 and the Oyster 46.

The Shipman 63 won the over 14m (46ft) category, ahead of the Etap 46 DS, Felci 49, Sunbeam 53 and the Wauquiez 47 PS.

As well as the powerboat and sail categories, the European Yacht of the Year awards also present a prize for innovation, which this year was awarded to the Etap 46 DS.
