| The US Mission in that country had stockpiled emergency supplies, including the Zodiac G470s, before the cyclone hit the country last Thursday. "Upon hearing of the impending storm, the US Mission in Bangladesh took immediate action to pre-position required supplies and equipment," read a statement from the US State Department. "Sixteen Zodiac boats were ready to use for emergency operations. Six water treatment systems were mobilized. Ten water ambulances were available."
"With partners CARE and Save the Children, 30,000 Emergency Survival Packages were pre-positioned in areas facing the oncoming cyclone and food commodities were pre-positioned for emergency response," it added.
According to wire reports, 3,500 people were killed, and tens of thousands of others have been displaced from their homes along the Bay of Bengal. According to Reuters, relief workers and the Bangladesh military have reached the last villages today.
"Food, clothes and shelter are needed immediately for the survivors who are resilient and are trying to start life anew," Louis-Georges Arsenault, of the U.N. children's fund, UNICEF, told the Associated Press.
The interim government said supplies would increase in coming weeks once US$142 million in promised emergency relief from international donors and the king of Saudi Arabia starts reaches the country. The US government has pledged US$2.1 million in emergency aid, and the assistance of two naval ships for medical services and evacuation. |
